William F. Buckley, Jr.

Posted by Mark on Thursday, February 28th, 2008. Filed under Celebrities.

Those who know me and my politics may be surprised to learn that I had great admiration and a sort of from afar fondness for WFB, who died yesterday.

I’ve read many of his books, especially the sailing books, but also several of his novels and - several times - his week-in-the-life memoirs, Cruising Speed and Overdrive.

Here’s a pretty good obit from The Wall Street Journal, another from the New York Times and a very good video (also from The Journal).

Finally, here is my favorite Buckley photo. Talk about a man with his fingers in a lot of things!

  • I add this postscript from Meet the Press.

  • And here’s a link to a blog posting by Dick Cavett. There have been so many of this kind of remembrance about Buckley, and virtually all of them get ’round to saying the same thing: his politics were uncomfortable for me, but he was a great guy.
