Andrew Bird

Posted by Mark on Saturday, March 15th, 2008. Filed under Music.

I’ve been listening to more than a bit of Andrew Bird as I drove through the Carolinas this week. There’s a very good “All Songs Considered” concert, a new EP called “Soldier On,” and then I found this KCRW “Morning Becomes Eclectic” set from April 2005.

In the ’70’s a guy named Emitt Rhodes called himself a “recording artist” because he played all the instruments, did all the recording, well before the technology made that relatively easy. Now with loops and Macs and more an artist truly can create a much larger imprint for his work. But it still begins with talent.

Here’s the KCRW set. Listen to the music but stay for the interview too.

UPDATE (3/27/08): Andrew Bird is contributing a handy little guide to the creative process - his process - in a series of posts in The New York Times. “Oh, no!” is the new song he’s deconstructing.

One Response to “Andrew Bird”

  • Thanks for sharing this. While creating music in a band setting is more organic, there’s something compelling about an individual building a song himself, layer upon layer.

The multi-instrumentalist thing seems to be a trend these days—see Liam Finn and Jon Brion.
