Competition for trash?

I’m a sucker for interesting recycling solutions, especially in the face of industrial and electronic waste that is reaching epidemic proportions, so this story appearing on the front page of this morning’s New York Times really caught my eye!

It seems that for several years now, Delaware has been taking retired New York City subway cars, which the state of New York has readily supplied for free, and dumping them onto a barren stretch of ocean floor in what has proved to be a successful venture at building an underwater reef, now teeming with healthy ocean life. It’s been so successful, in fact, that now everyone wants a piece of the action!
