Golf v. Tennis
Tennis won out yesterday. I had been watching golf all weekend, certainly not the usual, but I was traveling with a friend who was glued to the latest Masters action on TV.
But yesterday, I jumped at the chance when offered tickets to see USA v. Spain as part of the US Davis Cup Team (tennis) competition in Winston-Salem.
I play tennis 2-3 times per week, but I’ve never experienced the excitement and the fun of a professional match in person. The crowd was fantastic; in fact it was announced that Winston-Salem’s weekend crowd was the largest on record for ANY Davis Cup match.
Andy Roddick and James Blake were scheduled to play singles matches against Spain. The US had already won overall; the score was USA 3, Spain 0, in a best of 5 series. Roddick sat out due to an earlier injury. No matter, I was able to watch Bob Bryan, one of the Bryan twins (#1 Doubles Team in the world) play against Spain’s Tommy Robredo. It’s evident that Bob’s game is doubles. Robredo gave Spain its only point in the competition winning 6-4, 6-4 over Bryan.
And my sentimental favorite, James Blake entertained the crowd with a win against Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 7-6. I even witnessed a turnaround, thru’ the legs shot by Blake. And he won the point. The crowd went crazy.
Although I spent the afternoon watching tennis, I was back in front of a TV in time to watch the last 4 holes of the 2007 Masters and see Zach Johnson hold on to his lead, adding a green jacket to his wardrobe.

Lyn - you are a fellow tennis nut - love it! I’ve been to the US Open the last 8 years in a row and will probably go as long as my body lets me. I play every chance I get but squash is also creeping into my racquet sport mania. When it comes to watching, I’m partial to the French (my heritage) and am excited by some of the “young guns” like Tsonga and Gasquet… GREAT TO KNOW I’M NOT THE ONLY TENNIS FREAK OUT THERE!
