Yeltsin I heard about yesterday. But this morning’s news that David Halberstam has died in an auto accident in Menlo Park, CA, came as a big surprise.

I’ll miss his thorough coverage of whatever he turned his attention to, his deep voice of commentary on virtually any topic, and the giddy surprise that new Halberstam book would bring when it arrived from Amazon and took over my weekend.
