Luxury purchases come to ecommerce

I’ve bought a $3,000 computer.

“Yes,” some said, “but that’s technology. You don’t have to touch a computer to know if you’ll like it in your home.”

I have a friend who bought a used car on eBay, a late model Maxima for low five figures.

“That’s different,” they said, “because you can see that model on the lot or in parking lots, and the presence of information about value and cost price and all is easy to find on the internet.”

My point is that buying high quality, high style home furnishings on the internet is near.

“No,” the counter is, “you have to see the finish, the distressing, you’ll want to be able to return what you don’t like, and that’s just so hard with furniture.”

An article in this morning’s New York Times says it’s working now with high end fashion.

“Retailers and brands are increasingly relying on the Internet to market $3,000 skirts and $5,000 suits to consumers who think nothing of spending that much on clothing. The trend represents another byproduct of high-speed Internet connections, but it also speaks to the growing belief among luxury retailers and designers that a two-dimensional Web store will not diminish their marquee status.”

It’s coming, I tell you…
