Run that red light!
Who knew? 70% of my (and your) car’s gas consumption never moves the wheels, according to Amory Lovins in a TED presentation in 2005 about winning the oil “endgame.” Lovins claims we can win this through good, old fashioned capitalism.
If you’re thinking at all like Thomas Friedman - or thousands more of us - that we need to end our addiction to oil, you’ll love Lovins’ dry, deadpan pitch.
Good timing with the article. I recently read at NYTimes.com that by eliminating left hand turns, UPS was able to “shave 28.5 million miles off its delivery routes, which has resulted in savings of roughly three million gallons of gas and has reduced CO2 emissions by 31,000 metric tons.”
I guess Washington, DC did have a hunch with the introduction of those crazy traffic circles.
