I was lucky enough to attend championship day at the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open. It’s amazing to see someone so small and thin as Lorena Ochoa step on the #6 teebox at Pine Needles and crank a drive straight down the middle out of sight. And in the same group, Morgan Pressel and eventual champion Cristie Kerr. The power and control they all had. I suppose that’s why they were in the last group of the day. What a great event. Pine Needles was in exceptional shape. The course was immaculate. The entire venue was so well set up and organized. I went with a good friend, Ellen LaPierre. An LPGA instructor and former Golfari instructor at Pine Needles. And former UNCG golf coach for the lady Spartans. We watched one of her former players, Becky Morgan, warm up on the range, about 8 spots down from Annika Sorenstam. Where Peggy Kirk Bell was having a brief visit before the final round began. It was a great day to see some of the legends, past and present, of women’s golf. Hats off to Pine Needles for a great U.S. Women’s Open.
